Three Keys to Greatness by Jim Rohn

Several years ago I went into the studio and recorded a 56-minute video for teenagers called "Three Keys To Greatness." Although my focus was for teenagers, the principles I shared certainly apply to adults as well.

Recently I was asked to list these three things using one to two sentences for each. Now for your benefit here they are again.

1) Setting Goals. I call it the view of the future. Most people, including kids, will pay the price if they can see the promise of the future. So we need to help our kids see a well-defined future, so they will be motivated to pay the price today to attain the rewards of tomorrow. Goals help them do this.

2) Personal Development. Simply making consistent investments in our self-education and knowledge banks pays major dividends throughout our lives. I suggest having a minimum amount of time set aside for reading books, listening to audiocassettes, attending seminars, keeping a journal and spending time with other successful people. Charlie “Tremendous’ Jones says you will be in five years the sum total of the books you read and the people you are around.

3) Financial Planning. I call it the 70/30 plan. After receiving your paycheck or paying yourself, simply setting aside 10% for saving, 10% for investing and 10% for giving, and over time this will guarantee financial independence for a teenager.

If a young person, or for that matter an adult, focused on doing these three simple things over a long period of time I believe they will be assured success!

What's Your Biggest Mistake?

So I'm watching The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch on CNBC, and he's interviewing Donald Trump, and he asks, "What is your biggest mistake?"

Great question to ask ourselves because success comes from all the hard knocks. My biggest mistakes come from NOT doing something, and then thinking "If only..." I can honestly say that I've made many mistakes, especially in business, but God has really helped me become who I am today through all of those times.

Here's some mistakes and lessons from this year I wanted to share:

Business:
Mistake- spending too much time on deals and people where the return is minimal
Lesson- I've been doing more due diligence on my clients and focusing on relationships that are long lasting. Business is all about the relationships, but there are people where spending time with them doesn't help at all. Also, never give up, love what you do, and know your product!

Spiritual:
Mistake- taking God for granted in the little things in life
Lesson- I have been involving God throughout the different aspects of my life each day, and what a difference it has made! Most of all, it has made me a much happier person, and other people can see it when you're happy.

Financial:
Mistake- spending money on things I really don't need
Lesson- this year especially, I am shopping less and loading up my savings because being self-employed has taught me so much about cash flow and money. If you want to get good at money, just become self-employed and you'll go through the school of hard knocks real quickly.

Friendships:
Mistake- I've made the mistake of losing touch with friends and while friendships are a two way street, I admit that I haven't been good at keeping up with the friends I hardly see.
Lesson- I've learned to be more intentional with my friendships and spending quality time with people to build a friendship that grows deep. God has blessed me with wonderful people in my life and I want to continue being intentional with my friends.

Relationships:
Mistake- taking initiative with the guys
Lesson- even though I take initiative on every area of my life, this is definitely an area where if the guy doesn't take initiative, I'm just not interested and it probably means he's not the right one for me. I've also learned that I need to be patient because I'm someone who gets things done, yet in relationships, it takes time to really foster a good relationship with someone and a lot of that comes with spending more time with them.

Colliers Young Guns Chili Cook Off

I love my job!  Not only do I love my job, but I love the brokerage and the people I work with.  Last week, we had a Young Guns Chili Cook Off- all the young brokers split up into teams (Office, Investments, Retail, and Industrial/R&D) and the Senior brokers were the judges for the 4 Categories:

  • Best Chili
  • Best Presentation
  • Best Drink
  • Best Costume

Here's some of the photos from the event:

I am proud to say that my Office Team won Best Chili and Best Dressed!  Our managing broker donated money on our behalf to a non-profit, and we won some gift cards and chili as well.  Colliers went all out and did a great job with the decorations and the cool aprons we got.  Our San Mateo, Palo Alto, and Pleasanton offices came as well for the festivities, and it was such a blast!  Colliers Rocks!

MSG Campin Trip to Yosemite

We had so much fun camping at Yosemite in Tuolumne Meadows.  The weather was great, except for the freezing nights.

We got there Friday night- Gaby, Misha, and I left around 3:30pm and due to a lot of traffic, got there around 9:30pm to set up camp in the dark.  Everyone else got there after midnight.  The next day, we made breakfast and went for a hike at Lembert Dome:

Saturday night, the sky was lit up with so many stars.  We saw the Milky Way and a bunch of shooting stars as well.  Overall, had a blast, and ended our year with a bang.  Go MSG!

Update On My Life

I realize I post a lot of photos and inspirational excerpts, but I hardly update on what's really going on in my life, so here goes:

Business:
Next week will be 1 year of me being in Commercial Real Estate. I look back at the year and I see how God has been a big part of every aspect. I went from feeling frustrated and feeling like I wanted to quit, to building a growing business. To date, I have 14 medical buildings that I am selling or leasing for landlords, and I also get to represent a whole bunch of tenants and buyers. God has been so awesome, and what I've learned the most out of this year is to rely on Him always and to give everything up to him. Colliers is sending me to Denver for something called Top Guns Training in August...I feel so honored because they pick 2 brokers who have been in the business less than 18 months to go through this training and I'm very excited about it. My goal is to get the Rookie of the Year award this year, so we'll see!

On another note, I finally found a tenant for my property in Vallejo- this is the property that was giving me the most headaches, but praise God that things are looking great with this!
I've been thinking about moving to Santa Clara, and met with my mortgage broker recently. If all looks good, I will probably wait until fall or winter to put my home on the market and buy a condo in Santa Clara.

Spiritual:
MSG has been such a blessing in my life. I love my community and being able to serve with this group. It wasn't until this month that I realized that I'm a little frustrated with going to Abundant Life as my church, yet being a part of a GRX Small Group. I really want to belong to one church body, and I've decided that after my service project with my high school kids in a few weeks, I'm going to check out GRX as a church for a little to see if it's a fit. I find that my community is more with GRX, so please pray for me as I'm making this decision, as Abundant Life is such a great church as well.

Relationships:
Still single, but I finally feel like I'm ready for a relationship.  God has been so good during my singleness right now because he's really made me into a whole person and I've been so happy. I know I'll meet my future husband some day, and until that day comes, I'm really enjoying my single life and being able to serve and let God use me to full capacity.

Overall, I love that I'm learning how to balance my life in the different areas. As busy as my career is, I have more balance now than I've ever had before, and I hope that God will continue to give me this blessing.
